FAQS
1. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A SAGE LEARNING CENTER ASSESSMENT? Prior to enrollment, your child's strengths and needs are measured, analyzed and discussed in terms of fluency and accuracy. During the assessment we examine basic foundational elements such as: fluency in foundational skills, phonics, pre-reading skills, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, fine motor skills, and math. Your child's scores will be assessed using research-based fluencies for each activity. In addition, we assess each learning channel (auditory, visual, motor and language) in order to determine how your child processes information. Furthermore, we complete a series of grade-level standardized tests, analyzing where your child is for reading (decoding), spelling, and foundational math skills. If your child is pre-K to the middle of first grade, the assessment will take approximately one hour. The full assessment, which is given to students above the middle of first grade, will take approximately two hours. Each assessment includes a summary explaining what was found during the assessment, as well as an in-depth consultation with a certified teacher. 2. ONCE I HAVE COMPLETED A SAGE LEARNING CENTER ASSESSMENT, WHAT IS NEXT? Following the assessment, we produce a written summary including a list of priorities for your child depending on his/her needs. We also recommend the number of hours we think will be beneficial in order for your child to succeed and schedule an in-depth consultation to go over our findings. If your child is enrolled, Sage will complete another assessment for your child every 60 hours to ensure growth is being made. 3. HOW IS SAGE LEARNING CENTER DIFFERENT FROM OTHER COMMERCIAL LEARNING CENTERS? We do not simply tutor children, we remediate in order to terminate or reduce the cause. Tutoring is an easy fix to an underlying setback; it allows a child to get by and pass a class but does not allow a child to change a learning behavior. We work towards developing a strong base or foundation; other centers may focus on the obvious problem or current struggle for the student. *see article "Remediation vs. Tutoring" 4. WHAT IS PRECISION TEACHING? To guarantee student learning success, every curriculum or teaching strategy needs to have specific tasks continuously measured. The most powerful system to combine these features is Precision Teaching developed by Ogden R. Lindsley, Ph.D. and his students. With Precision Teaching, a student is timed on specific activities until he/she can perform a certain amount accurately within a specified amount of time. We record a student's performance on a Standard Celeration Chart, which gives a "learning picture" to the teacher and student, enabling them to make decisions about the student's learning program. The goal of the timed practice is to build fluency which ensures a student permanently retains the skills taught (retention); can perform them for extended periods of time (endurance); and can easily apply them to new learning situations (application). According to Owen White, Precision Teaching "has been used successfully to teach the progress of learners ranging from the severely handicapped to university graduate students, from the very young to the very old." 5. HOW DO I KNOW SAGE LEARNING CENTER IS RIGHT FOR MY CHILD? If you are concerned that your struggling child receives specific, individualized one-on-one instruction with a qualified teacher, Sage can assist you. 6. WHAT WOULD A TYPICAL SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE FOR MY CHILD? A typical schedule during the school year is two times per week for an hour each session (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday). We offer more intense sessions during our summer sessions, in which students come every day, Monday-Friday, from 1-3 hours per day for a certain period of time depending on the session. These sessions are very productive and effective because of the intensity and consistency. 7. WHAT AGE GROUP OF STUDENTS DOES SAGE TYPICALLY WORK WITH? We work with students ages 4-18. 8. WHERE IS SAGE LEARNING CENTER LOCATED? We are located at 2055 N. 22nd. Ave. Suite 4, Bozeman, MT 59718 9. WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS THAT MY CHILD MIGHT NEED SAGE LEARNING CENTER? Parents should look for multiple behaviors or warning signs which may signal their child may be at risk in their educational life. If you are noticing your child struggling in any of the following areas: Pronunciation problems, difficulty decoding (or sounding out) new words, unable to complete tasks efficiently, poor spelling, poor organizational skills, unable to complete homework independently, little class participation, difficulty remembering math facts, slow or illegible writing, trouble with foreign languages, experiences mental fatigue frequently, or difficulty remembering directions. When parents and educators observe many of these warning signals and are able to get help, most children experience success in matching their performance to their potential. *see "Is My Child at Risk?" article by Elizabeth Haughton. |
